How to Slimdown this Summer and Feel Confident Rocking Those Denim Shorts

3001Fitness • Jun 29, 2018

Summer is officially here! Yay!!

Except for some of us it’s not a season we look forward to because we’re forced to bare it all, put on a swimsuit or shorts and feel uncomfortable because they don’t fit like they used to. I think every woman has felt that way at one point or another. Even though I’m in a great shape the past couple weeks my schedule has been pretty hectic, and I let my diet slip a little. When I put on my bathing suit for the first time this season, I too, felt a little self-conscious.

So what do we do now that the Summer is here, 90 degree weather is approaching and last year’s pair of white shorts feels a little too tight around the hips?

At Core Principles we have a Summer Slim-down strategy that will get you feeling fabulous in as little as 4 weeks . It involves a little exercise,  nutrition, supportive community and the outlook you have on your body and self-image.

  • Exercise – Yes we all know we need to exercise! But not many of us know how to exercise effectively to bring about the results we want. You may wonder why you’re working out every day and not seeing any inches drop off your waist. It’s because exercise is a science and needs to be implemented in a way that fits with your objectives, lifestyle, capabilities, limitations and current fitness levels. For best results we recommend a combo of cardio and weight training, as well as incorporating some mobility and stretching. If you’ve never exercised in your life it’s probably not wise to jump into a pool of sharks and sign up for “insanity bootcamp” or something equally grueling. The key is to start slow and progress gradually, which is highly linked to long-term exercise adherence and best results.

  • Nutrition – “Tomorrow I’m starting my new diet and going to eat better!”… said everyone and their mother after having one to many slices of pizza. Before getting into fitness I used to try a bunch of different diets. My first one was the South Beach Diet. It worked well in the beginning because I ended up dropping 10 lbs in about 3 weeks. But then when I went off it and started eating “normal” again all the weight came back. I remember my mom tried the Atkins diet when it first became a craze and though she loved the results, she kept eating very fatty foods and had constant indigestion. As you may have guessed, that did not work out very well in the long term. So what is the perfect diet?? ***drumroll*** There isn’t one! At least not one where one size fits all… the best way to go about eating healthy is to focus on good eating habits and build them one by one. At Core Principles we help you work on those habits, and focus on avoiding restriction and eating balanced meals that kick those sugar and junk food cravings.

  •   Community – Have you ever walked in to a party where you don’t know anyone, so you head straight for the bar hoping that first martini will help calm those nerves? This is similar to how people feel when they join a large gym ala LA Fitness heading straight for the elliptical or the treadmill, because they feel intimidated by all the machines and don’t know the first thing to do with a dumbbell. Well.. working out certainly doesn’t have to feel that way! At Core Principles for example, we value our members and create a supportive community where you actually have fun and exercise with the people you love and care about!! Having fun while losing weight at the same time?! YES, it’s possible when you have a great group and a camaraderie like the one in our studio. Not only does our community bring enjoyment into working out, but the support our members and coaches give each other motivates our clients to do more, in and outside of the gym!

  • Changing Your Outlook – Sure you may not be a 110 lbs and fit into size 2 jeans but guess what?! We all come in different shapes and sizes and there’s beauty to all of us! If you look at a pear vs. an apple can you tell which one is better or more attractive? Probably not. If anything, it depends on what your taste preference is. So if you carry a little more weight in the hips or thighs, embrace it and wear it with pride! A little meat on your bones is sexy and a sets a new beauty standard. Look at celebrities like Scarlett Johansen, Jennifer Lopez or Adele. These women carry a little extra weight but are beautiful in their own way and feel comfortable in their own skin! So if you’re feeling the Summer blues because your college T-s are now too small, throw on a new shade of pink lipstick, get a hot pair of stilettos and love yourself and your body because you only have one life and it’s too short to compare yourself to others.

In this week’s video, we are covering a question that comes up a lot: What can I eat for lunch that:requires little to no prep, will keep me satisfied, and is not highly processed? Do you struggle with that midday break to eat lunch like me?? Many of my clients have come to me really at a loss for lunch specifically, because they haven’t made a plan, and they either grab handfuls of random things together, go through a drive thru, or skip it all together! Does that sound like you? Well, check out this week’s video to see my recommendations for how to make sure those lunches don’t thwart your progress to reaching your health goals. Eating at home more than going out to eat is one way to make progress on your health and nutrition because it puts you in full control. Are you a “perfectionist"? When you strive for perfection, you have good intentions. You want to take care of your health, feel your best, and live a long and happy life with loved ones. One way that perfectionism can show up in our health is through a fancy term known as cognitive distortion also known as all-or-nothing thinking. Striving for excellence can be a really wonderful thing! It means it is important to you to look after yourself! However, all or nothing thinking can also lead to disappointment, burnout, and self-criticism when we inevitably miss a day, or go “off plan”. When our focus is on getting a “perfect” outcome, we lose satisfaction and enjoyment along the way and lose sight of other measures of progress. Want to know one of the greatest predictors of long term success with any behavior change? FLEXIBILITY. Flexibility allows you to come as you are on your best day AND on your worst day. It fosters self-compassion, and helps you to keep moving forward. Check out this video below to find out more!
