Joining a gym can be scary, joining a gym when you are 76 can be even more intimidating. Questions will run through your head, will I fit in? Will it be too hard for me? Will I be able to do the exercises? Will I get hurt? Everyone probably has these thoughts when you are joining a gym, they just might be a little more important if you are 76.
I firmly believe that it is never too late to start exercising. Yes, what you do when you are 70 may be a little different than what you did when you are 30 but you can also do something.
Today I want to share with you Joe’s story of how he got started here at Core Principles and how it has helped him.
At Core Principles, we pride ourselves on building a community of similar people so you don’t only come to workout you also come to hang out with people you can call your friends. One of the ways we do that is by offering our members an option to buy a gift card for a month of training that they can give to a friend or family member. One of our rock star members Maeve approached us and said that she had a friend who was interested in joining a gym and she wanted to buy him a gift card as a present. Right of the bat, we knew that if they were a friend of Maeve they would be a great fit here at Core Principles. Long story short Maeve bought the gift card and brought Joe in for his first training session.
Right, when we met Joe we knew he was going to be a perfect fit. Joe is a successful lawyer, former competitive tennis player, grandfather, and one of the nicest guys you will meet. Joe is similar to many of the people we work with in that he was active in the past but has not really done anything for himself in a while. Joe had some achy knees but overall he moved very well. His goals were to increase his strength, stamina, and just feel good overall. If he lost some weight that would be great but that was not his number one goal.
During Joe’s first month he absolutely rocked it. He was able to build up his total body strength, increase his energy and stamina, but most importantly prove to himself that he can still workout at his age and feel better. Joe is a man of consistency who sticks to his word if he says he will be here a certain day you can expect to see him. Joe feels so much better throughout the day, he does not have as many aches and pains and is able to do things so much easier. Joe felt so good about his first month here that he decided to sign up for a longer commitment and continue his success.
We know Joe was making great progress but one day Joe hit us with some news. Some news that I was not expecting at all and left me shocked. During his workout, Joe looks at me and says, “I have something to tell you. I have officially made the decision to retire this year, and it is partially because of you guys. Since I started coming here I feel so great and realized I can still do so many things that I decided to retire this year and enjoy myself.” My jaw dropped, working in this field you hear great story’s every day about peoples success but this one stood out for me. Something like this is truly life-changing, going to the gym has proved to Joe that he can still do so much that he is ready to retire and have some fun. Does it get much better than that?
As much as Joe credits us with helping him achieve this he needs to give himself plenty of credit. We can’t force Joe to show up, he does that himself and works hard.
